Obituary: Eric Sacher

ERIC SACHER April 20, 1939 – January 30, 2020

Eric Sacher (80) of Steamboat Springs, CO passed away peacefully January 30, 2020 surrounded by daughter Carrie and the loving staff at the Good Samaritan Society Ft. Collins Village. Eric had suffered strokes in 2017. Eric’s wife Jane Ann (Wiegert) Sacher preceded him in death. Eric is greatly missed by his children, Mark Eric Sacher of Flagstaff, AZ; daughters Suzanne Sacher (Mark) Longhurst of Temecula, CA; and Carrie (Tyler) Gibbs of Steamboat Springs; six grandchildren, Noah and Aidan Gibbs, Joshua Blaise, Kalena, J.D. and Aaron Longhurst. Eric is survived by his half-sister Alice Swartzman (Bill) Englander of Pacific Grove, CA; half-brother Dan (Arlene) Swartzman of Chicago, IL; nieces and nephews and many other relatives. Eric had a half-brother in Saarbruecken, Germany – son of Joseph Sacher – whom he never met. Eric’s father passed away in Recife, Brazil, 1969, and mother Tamara in 1998. Eric will be remembered for his gentle quiet nature, great smile, sense of humor, adventurous spirit and fondness for music. He was a computer engineer and programmer, and his work was a source of pleasure to him. You could always find him happy at his computer, solving a new problem. As a Russian refugee from Shanghai during WW II, he settled in Seattle with his mother Tamara, stepfather Alex Swartzman, and siblings Alice and Dan. He became a U.S. citizen as a teen and with his love of aviation joined the Air National Guard. Eric met his wife Jane at Roosevelt High School in Seattle, and they were married 58 years before Jane passed in 2017. Eric had an entrepreneurial spirit, and truly followed what he enjoyed. He was a self-taught computer engineer who got his start fixing cash registers for NCR. He had a long career with NCR before venturing from southern California to Phoenix to work in management and marketing for Cirrus Computers and Genrad Designs. This led to the inception of his own business Serendipity Systems, Inc. based in Sedona, AZ. For over 20 years, the company provided test products and engineering services to the electronics manufacturing and repair community. Eric’s declining health led to his retirement. Locally, he loved to ski and fly his model airplanes in the valley and assist others with tech help. He was a longtime member of Concordia Lutheran Church in Steamboat Springs and Rock of Ages Lutheran Church in Sedona, AZ. Eric will be sorely missed by family and friends. A memorial service is planned 11 a.m. Saturday, April 18 at Concordia Lutheran church. Eric’s ashes will be buried with Jane’s this summer at Strandvik Lutheran church cemetery, Lake Park, MN near the family farm. Memorial donation suggestions: The Good Samaritan Society Fort Collins Village on Trilby Rd., specifying employee scholarships or employee assistance; Concordia Lutheran Church; or Academy of Model Aeronautics scholarship fund (AMA).
