August 27, 1935- June 15, 2017
Dave Zabel passed away on June 15, 2017. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Pat Zabel. He is also survived by daughter Becky (Paul) Zech, son Glen (Connie) Zabel, brother Richard (Margaret) Zabel and five grandchildren: Megan, Laura, Kevin, Taylor and Bailey.
Dave was born in St. Paul, Minnesota to Harry and Helen Zabel on August 27, 1935. After graduating from Central High School, Dave attended the University of Minnesota earning his degree in Mechanical Engineering. He later received a Master’s Degree in Engineering Math from the University of Toledo. His first job was as an engineer in the defense industry in Rockford, IL. He then moved into engineering and marketing at Toledo Scale in Toledo, OH. Dave and Pat returned to the Twin Cities in 1967 where he eventually became Vice President of sales for Xerxes Corporation. Always a success in business, Dave was never the less an entrepreneur at heart. In 1983 an ad in the Wall Street Journal announcing the sale of a property management company called Mountain Resorts Inc. in a little Western ski town caught his attention. As a family that skied, Dave and Pat checked Steamboat out and jumped into the snow with all four feet. Mountain Resorts grew substantially under Dave’s leadership and in 1985 his son Glen joined him in the business. Dave served on the Steamboat Chamber Board and the Lodging Committee during his years with Mountain Resorts. After selling the business in 1998, Dave and Glen purchased the Inn at Steamboat which they ran for another five years. Dave was a Rotarian for 25 years and served on many committees over the years. He was an active member of the United Methodist Church of Steamboat and volunteered on several boards and committees there as well. He spent many years on the Horizons Board of Directors, including a term as president. Dave was active on the Tread of Pioneers Board and Perry Mansfield Board and volunteered on the Lift UP finance committee for many years. Dave shared his considerable business skills in the community by volunteering as a SCORE counselor.
Dave was a great husband, father, grandfather, best friend and mentor to his family and he touched the lives of many people. He was an avid tennis player and skier, and was never happier than when he was at the family lake cabin in Minnesota. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, July 8, 2017; 11:00 a.m. at Steamboat Springs United Methodist Church, located at Eighth & Oak Streets. In lieu of flowers, Dave would have preferred that donations be made to Lift UP of Routt County or Steamboat Springs United Methodist Church endowment fund.
