Best of the Boat: Best Interior Design Firm — Rumor Designs
November 14, 2017
Next year, the team at Rumor Designs will celebrate 10 years of business in Steamboat Springs.
Valerie Stafford and Bruce Caplowe teamed up in 2008 to form the design firm that specializes in mountain modern interiors.
"We've just grown over the years," Stafford says. "We have a blast doing it. It's always changing and always different."
Stafford got her master's degree in design while attending school in Florence, Italy. Caplowe moved to Steamboat in the 1970s, working in real estate and interior design. Six others work at the firm, all turning their clients' dreams into reality. "We are really a design firm that is a team," Stafford says.
Their work can be seen in businesses throughout the community, including Wild Plum Gourmet Grocer and One Steamboat Place. The firm also specializes in residential design, working with countless individual clients. A year ago they even bought an aging home on Alexander Way and completely gutted and rebuilt it — adding on a two-car garage, master suite and completely transforming the exterior. They then put it on the market, where it quickly sold.
"We re-did every square inch of it," Stafford says. "It came out great."

The firm will consult and help clients with making even small changes that can quickly update a property, such as adding interior fabrics and lighting to a rustic cabin. "These types of things can really transform a place," Stafford says. "Interior design is not just decorating but also design."
And, of course, they're huge fans of the popular design shows on Home & Garden Television.
"We love the 'Property Brothers,' and 'Fixer Upper,' Stafford says, after, of course, consulting with the team.
