Why I Moved to Steamboat Springs — Tim Wohlgenant

Tim Wohlgenant, executive director, Yampa Valley Community Foundation

“Almost 20 years ago, I had the fortune to work with a Steamboat Springs community group called the Emerald Mountain Partnership, formed to protect the terrain west of Howlesen Hill for public use. The 6,000-acre parcel was owned by the Colorado State Land Board, which had proposed to sell it for private development. I was brought in to put together a transaction between the SLB, U.S. Bureau of Land Management and 53 private landowners in a public land exchange process – and over five years we got it done. Through trips to Steamboat from Denver, I got to know and love the town and its culture. When I learned of the opportunity for the executive director role at the Yampa Valley Community Foundation, my wife, Annie, and I jumped at the chance. We moved last May, just in time to enjoy a summer of hiking and biking. While the pandemic has made it a challenging time to join a new community, we’ve found our new neighbors to be genuine, kind and generous. I’m grateful to work with a wonderful team and our bighearted donors to support the nonprofit organizations which ensure the Yampa Valley continues to thrive and remain a special place.”
