Routt County ranked the fifth-healthiest county in U.S.

Settle in Steamboat Springs and you picked a healthy spot.

Routt County was recognized as the fifth healthiest county in the country in 2020, according to the U.S. News and World Report Healthiest Communities rankings, beating other Colorado counties such as Pitkin (Aspen), Summit and San Miguel (Telluride).

The rankings are based on 80 indicators across 10 categories, evaluating 3,000 counties nationwide on population health, equity, education, economy, housing, food and nutrition, environment, public safety, community vitality and infrastructure. The top-ranked county was Los Alamos County, N.M., followed by Douglas County, Colo., in second and Falls Church City, Va., in third.

The reason for the accolades, says Routt County Public Health Director Roberta Smith, is the area’s performance in such health metrics as life expectancy, smoking rates and health insurance, as well as easy access to outdoor recreation and a general interest among residents to exercise and eat healthy. “Those metrics all help us score high,” Smith says, adding Routt County also has great access to mental health services, strong funding for anti-smoking campaigns and more.
