Winter returning to Steamboat Springs

— Friday was the first day of spring, but winter hasn’t taken its last stand in the Yampa Valley.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for Steamboat Springs and surrounding areas from midnight Sunday until 6 a.m. Tuesday. Meteorologists say a strong storm system is approaching from the southwest and will mix with colder air Sunday night. The winds will eventually shift from southwest to northwest as the cold front sweeps through the region.

Precipitation over Steamboat Springs is expected to begin as rain late Sunday afternoon before changing to snow and heavy snow. The snow is expected to continue through Monday night. Between 5 and 10 inches are expected by Tuesday morning.

Gusty winds of 10 to 20 mph will accompany the storm, according to the National Weather Service. Blowing snow will contribute to hazardous travel conditions.

A chance of snow will remain in the local forecast through Thursday night. Daytime highs this week will be in the mid- to upper 30s, with overnight lows in the 20s and teens.

The winter weather will be in stark contrast to the unseasonable high temperatures of the past week. Daytime highs reached into the 60s at the end of last week and this weekend.
