Wild horses offer unique sightseeing opportunity

Wild horses are Moffat County’s best-kept secret. Sandwash Basin, which is west of Craig, offers viewers a chance to see these mustangs in their natural habitat.

The 160,000-acre public land area is located northwest of Maybell. Take U.S. Highway 40 west 31 miles to Maybell, then drive on Colorado Highway 318 for 17 miles to the Sandwash Basin’s southern entrance. Moffat County roads will direct visitors through the basin.

The best chance to see horses is on 75 North Road and from County Road 67. Both roads head north through Sandwash Basin.

Horses can best be seen on ridge tops during the warmest part of the day. Herds include pintos, grays, whites, blacks, palominos, red and blue roans, bays and sorrels.

Sage grouse, raptors, great horned owls, burrowing owls, coyote, pronghorn antelope and mule deer can also be seen at the site.

The basin offers a variety of recreational opportunities including horseback riding, camping, motorcycling, snowmobiling, off-highway vehicle riding, and big and small game hunting.

The area is also of interest to geologists and archeologists. Sandwash Basin has many dry streambeds and gullies, and the possibility of flash flooding should convince visitors not to camp in washes.

Four-wheel drive vehicles are recommended on the roads, which are not maintained in the winter. Roads become impassable during wet weather.

For more information on the area, call the Bureau of Land Management’s Little Snake Resource Area Office at (970) 826-5000.
