What’s cookin’?

Kitchen voyeurs unleashed in Steamboat this weekend

If you get a thrill from peering into other people’s pantries, if double Dutch ovens make your day, and if cleverly conceived kitchen cabinets give you chills, you’ll want to make plans for the 2006 Kitchen Tour and Designers Expo.

The kitchen tour features a half-dozen of Steamboat’s best-designed private kitchens. Sandy Berger, one of the organizers of Saturday’s event, said the kitchens aren’t necessarily the biggest and most expensive in the area. Instead, they reflect a range of homes and budgets.

“Last year, we had a couple of smaller homes in town on the tour, and people really liked it because they could identify with the kitchens” and imagine them in their own homes, Berger said.

The kitchens on the tour include two in the Agate Creek subdivision – those of Carol and Rick Dowden and Peter and Kim Kreissig. Kitchens in the Old Town homes of Rob and Alison Reagin and Randy and Debby Fox also will be opened to the public.

People attending the tour will view the kitchens of Paul and Mitzi Franklin in Elkins Meadow and artist Phyl Sharp’s home in The Sanctuary.

In addition to the kitchen tour, participants will be able to pick the brains of some of the most talented kitchen designers and suppliers in the market during the expo in the Strings in the Mountains Music Festival Park tent.

There will be food to nibble on – prepared from the latest “Steamboat Seasons” cookbook. And throughout the tour and expo, there will be silent auction items to tempt participants.
