Steamboat tennis team opens season with win

— The Steamboat Springs High School girls tennis team started its 2011 season Saturday with a 5-2 win against Thompson Valley.

Steamboat got wins from singles players Christi Valicenti, Claire Parsons and Rachelle Steele-Cerone. The No. 1 doubles team of Ali Diehl and Lauren Siegel and the No. 3 doubles team of Ellie Bender and Rachel Grubbs also won.

“That was a great opener for us,” Steamboat coach John Aragon said. “There was no one that had an easy match. We’ve got 11 very competitive girls that have skills behind them. Looking at it, that depth always serves you well. We know we’ll have a solid team throughout the year.”

Aragon said he was especially pleased with the play of his singles players. All faced tough matches but won in straight sets.

“They all had tough opponents,” Aragon said. “They went out and figured their opponents out and got three wins. It was really exciting to see.”

With it being so early in the season, Aragon said the roster could change.

Steamboat should find out early how good it actually is. The team plays March 18 against Boulder and March 19 against Kent Denver, both at home.

The team then plays at Durango before the highly contested Western Slope Open in Grand Junction on March 25 and 26.

“The Western Slope comes pretty quick in Grand Junction,” Aragon said. “It gives our athletes a chance to see some really solid opponents and sets some goals for the rest of the season.”
