— With nearly 2 feet of snow falling on the mountain during the past week and another foot in the forecast, Steamboat Ski Area officials announced Saturday that additional terrain will open Sunday.

"Thanks to the recent storm patterns, we are on track to immediately open more terrain and trails," Chris Diamond, president and chief operating officer of Steamboat Ski and Resort Corp., said in a news release.

On Sunday, the Thunderhead Express and Bashor chairlifts will open providing access to Upper Vagabond, part of Bashor Bowl and Why Not. Ropes are expected to drop in the Priest Creek area by late morning adding terrain from Storm Peak Face to High Noon down to Duster, according to the release.

Elkhead chairlift joins the mix Monday, providing access to Rolex, West Side, Lower High Noon and Broadway. Lil' Rodeo Terrain Park also will open Monday with 10 features. On Tuesday, the ski area expects to open Sundown Express along with trails in that area. Sunshine Express and South Peak are expected to open before the end of the week, the release states.

Ski area officials hope to open Morningside on Dec. 22, which is when the First Tracks program will begin, as well.

The new terrain offerings are coupled with more good news for Steamboat in the forecast. A winter storm warning is in effect for Northwest Colorado from noon Sunday through 6 a.m. Tuesday. The area is forecast to get 8 to 15 inches of snow with as much as 20 inches above 9,000 feet, according to the National Weather Service office in Grand Junction. The storm also is expected to bring 10 to 20 mph winds to the area Sunday and Monday before another storm is expected to arrive Tuesday night, according to the Weather Service.
