— The new bus shelters in downtown Steamboat Springs are the winners of Downtown Colorado Inc.’s Best Public Space Project.

The award is part of the Governor’s Awards for Downtown Excellence put on by the nonprofit Downtown Colorado Inc.

According to the nonprofit’s website, the awards are judged based on impact, innovation, how local assets are complemented, replication (in other towns) and use of local resources.

The downtown bus shelter project installed nine shelters designed by Steamboat’s Vertical Arts with design input from Mainstreet Steamboat Springs. The shelters were designed to reflect Northwest Colorado’s historic architecture, and each has its own theme.

The final cost of the project was $306,000, with $240,000 coming from federal grant funding and the rest being covered by the city.

According to a letter from Downtown Colorado Inc., these are the judges’ comments on the project:

“The new bus shelters not only encourage mobility and connections within the downtown and the ski resort, they also provide a compelling opportunity to ‘tell the story’ of downtown Steamboat. The excellent collaborative and inclusive process to develop the design for the shelters was admirable, and the use of local designers and fabricators illustrates a commitment to the Steamboat community. The new shelters are also striking, beautiful, sustainable and functional — well done!”

The award will be presented at Downtown Colorado Inc.’s Governor’s Awards for Downtown Excellence Gala on Sept. 13 at the American Mountaineering Center in Golden.
