Tread of Pioneers Museum is closed today for the New Year’s Day holiday.

Adult, child pottery classes slated to start this month

Several pottery classes are scheduled to begin this month at the Steamboat Arts & Crafts Gym.

A four-week pottery hand building and pottery wheel class with Lance Whitner is from 6 to 9 p.m. Mondays starting Jan. 10. The cost is $150 per person, and materials are $60.

A six-week beginner/intermediate pottery wheel class with Julie Anderson is from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays starting Jan. 18. The cost is $250 per person, and materials are $60.

A five-week beginner or advanced pottery wheel class for children ages 7 and older is from 3:45 to 6 p.m. Wednesdays starting Jan. 12. The cost is $175 and includes materials.

Library to train volunteers with Spellbinders program

Spellbinders is a national nonprofit organization composed of intergenerational volunteers trained in the art of oral storytelling for school children. After attending a mandatory two-day training workshop, volunteers will be assigned a local elementary classroom to visit once a month over the course of the school year. This volunteer opportunity is a large time commitment consisting of approximately eight to 10 hours per month reading, learning, and telling stories.

The next training workshop is from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Jan. 16 and Jan. 23 at Bud Werner Memorial Library. Participants must attend both sessions. The cost is $75, and the fee is waived if you complete the training and sign a commitment contract to tell stories in the schools at least six times per school year. Steamboat Mini Mites to skate at Avalanche game

The Steamboat Springs Mini Mites hockey team will be skating during the intermissions at the Colorado Avalanche-New York Islanders hockey game at 1 p.m. Jan. 8 at the Pepsi Center in Denver.

For each ticket sold through the Mites, $5 will go back to the team.
