Coroner releases names of accident victims
October 6, 2007
Steamboat Springs — Routt County Deputy Coroner Mitch Locke released the names Friday of two men that died in a head-on crash west of Hayden on Thursday.
Daniel J. Richards, 26, of Hockessin, Del., and Gustavo Gonzalez, 36, of Craig were killed at about 2 p.m. after the men’s vehicles collided on U.S. Highway 40 west of the Yampa River State Park.
A 15-year-old girl, Ashley Gonzalez, and 3-year-old Daniel Gonzalez were riding in Gonzalez’s vehicle. The children suffered moderate injuries and were taken to Yampa Valley Medical Center to be treated.
All four people involved in the accident were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the accident, Colorado State Patrol Sgt. Chad Dunlap said Thursday.
Richards and Gonzalez died after Gonzalez’s white Chrysler sedan drifted from the westbound lane of traffic into the eastbound lane, striking Richards’ red Ford Focus.
Drugs, alcohol and speed are not suspected to be contributing factors, Dunlap said.
