Hayden High School senior Holli Salazar has been chosen to participate in the Colorado Coaches of Girls Sports All-State Volleyball Games. The games will take place Sunday at Broomfield High School. The first game starts at 11 a.m. and will represent athletes from Class 1A. Class 2A starts at 11:30 a.m., 3A at 12:30 p.m., 4A at 1 p.m. and 5A at 2 p.m.

CCGS began sponsoring the All-State Volleyball Games in 1978 to provide girls a showcase for talent. Each senior athlete is nominated by coaches in her league, while coaches from all over the state make the final selection of 90 players. Girls are chosen based on talent, dedication, team play and leadership.

Salazar led the Tigers with 186 kills and 51 aces. She also finished second in blocks with 51.

Youth girls soccer team goes undefeated

The Steamboat Springs U-11 girls soccer team finished 10-0 on the season, playing a schedule of teams mostly from the Front Range.

The team – made up of girls from local middle schools – was the only youth soccer team to finish the season with an unblemished record.

Members of the team included Natalie Bohlmann, Nicole Bosick, Claire Cohen, Kali Dodd, Avalena Everard, Jordie Floyd, Mackenzie Gansman, Dominique Katthain, Maddie Labor, Ellese Lupori, Jenna Miller, Kathleen O’Connell, Tess Richey, Tanner Stover, Samantha Terranova, C.C. Wheeler, Ocoee Wilson and Hannah Winegarner.

“More than anything, they set a goal for themselves to work hard and do their best and really support each other,” coach Caroline Bohlmann said. “Watching that through the season was a great thing. It’s something you just don’t see. I feel lucky to have been a part of it. They were always positive and always supporting each other.”

3 high school boys

make All-League team

Three members of the Steamboat Springs High School soccer team made first-team All-League.

Juniors Connor Birch and Andrew White and senior Blake Eddington were named to the squad.

Birch played goalkeeper for Steamboat and emerged as one of the team’s leaders. White, a midfielder, set up much of the Sailors offense.

“I think it’s debatable, but Connor is one of the best goalkeepers in the league,” Steamboat coach Rob Bohlmann said. “Andrew White is kind of a honing midfielder who was a workhorse and playmaker. He was one of the heartbeats of this group.”

Eddington led the Sailors in goals.

“Blake had the mentality to put that ball in the back of the net,” Bohlmann said. “All three guys are very deserving of first-team selections.”

Steamboat finished the year 10-6 overall before falling in the first round of the playoffs to Wheat Ridge.

Girls hockey plays well

at Fall Faceoff in Aspen

The Steamboat Springs Youth Hockey Association U-19 girls team finished with a 2-1-1 record during the weekend at the Fall Faceoff tournament in Aspen.

Steamboat opened Friday with a 4-1 win against the Junior Eagles, of Fort Collins. Scoring for Steamboat were Corinne Landy, Heidi Cordell, Kim Taylor and Meghan Lukens.

Steamboat then played the rival Colorado Select U-16 AA team. Steamboat beat Colorado Select the week before, but it couldn’t come away with a win Saturday, falling 2-0.

“Colorado Select is an excellent team,” coach Alexa Pighini said. “If we don’t play smart hockey, they will capitalize on our mistakes.”

On Saturday night, Steamboat easily beat the Arizona Selects, 5-1, thanks to a hat trick by Courtney Garth and goals from Cordell and Lilly Hoff.

Steamboat concluded its tournament by skating to a 1-1 tie with defending state champion Telluride. Garth picked up the lone Steamboat goal, while goaltender Ellana Williams was solid in net. On the weekend, she stopped 44 of 49 shots.
