Sports briefs for July 14

Dave Shively

Soroco High School junior-to-be Sarajane Rossi was recently selected to an elite all-star team chosen to compete at the Thursday conclusion of a four-day basketball camp in Aspen hosted by Portland Trail Blazers general manager Kevin Pritchard.

“It was a big incentive to make the game because they televised it,” Soroco girls basketball coach Danelle Rivera said, pointing out how Rossi was picked to the team from a group of 90 campers as one of only two players from Class 2A schools.

Rossi tallied 3 assists, 3 steals, 6 rebounds and 2 points in the game.

Rivera took eight Soroco athletes, including three returning varsity players – Rossi, Kelsey Samuelson and Traci Schlegel – to the camp she called “eye-opening.”

“It was huge, because when you’ve got kids with aspirations to play beyond high school, especially coming from small schools, they don’t realize what’s out there,” Rivera said of the high-intensity play in the “pro”-level ability group with a statewide representation of athletes from large 4A and 5A schools.

The camp capped off a productive summer of off-season training for Rivera’s squad, who headed to the Aspen camp after playing 10 games in three days at a late June team camp in Wyoming.

Triathlon nearing cap, looking for volunteers

With the August 26th Steamboat Springs Triathlon only six weeks away, event co-founder and volunteer coordinator Joy Rasmussen reminded interested swimmers, cyclists and runners the race will be capped at 600 participants.

“It will probably sell out within the next week,” said Rasmussen, pointing to the list of more than 450 already signed up.

Rasmussen thinks people in reasonably good physical condition still have time to develop and implement a training plan in time for the 3/4 -mile swim across Lake Catamount, 20-mile paved road ride to Howelsen Hill and back for a four-mile run.

“You could spend a couple sessions with one of the (Old Town Hot Springs) coaches and really learn to swim faster and more efficiently,” Rasmussen said, adding a reminder about the race’s team divisions.

Volunteers still are needed for registration on Aug. 25 and on race day. Duties include body marking and working as a course marshal, parking attendant or aid station helper. Volunteers get a T-shirt, goodie bag and entrance to the party following the race. Those interested should contact Rasmussen at joy@mybrokers.com.
