South Routt showcases artists

Music, poetry and more featured in free event at Mugshot

— Poets, musicians and other artists from South Routt County will showcase their talents at a free event today in Oak Creek.

Flute player Belinda Rossi, poet Nina Rogers, poet Ellen Bonnifield, keyboards player Andy Schaffner and guitarist Deb Lenhart are among the artists on the lineup for the evening of readings and musical performances. The show starts at 7 p.m. today at The Mugshot coffee shop in Oak Creek, and it's expected to last for about an hour and a half.

Event organizer Paul Bonnifield said the idea came up when he was talking with Steamboat Springs cellist and arts advocate John Sant'Ambrogio about the variety of art available locally.

"We were talking about art and music, theater and painting, the whole thing, about how so much of it is in Routt County. We thought there's so much good art we ought to draw attention to it somehow," Bonnifield said.

The resulting program is a chance to show off and encourage local artists, he said.

Rossi plans to play a two-movement piece by C.P.E. Bach that features herself on flute, Schaffner on harpsichord and Sant'Ambrogio on cello. She said she was excited to work with the delicate sound of the harpsichord and to participate in an evening that brings several elements of the arts world together in one program.

"It's a great way to celebrate the arts in South Routt in a casual atmosphere, much like old music was actually performed," Rossi said.

Rossi got involved in the program when Bonnifield, a longtime acquaintance and fellow South Routt resident, asked her to join in on the event he was organizing. Bonnifield also recruited his wife, Ellen, to read some of her lighthearted poetry with a musical quality.

Guitarist and singer Lenhart plans to play a few songs. She describes her original work and cover selections as easy listening with a classic rock edge.

Performing under the band name In Flight, Lenhart has plans in motion to put out an album featuring songs she recorded with former bandmate Jeff Miller.

The night also is a chance to show off the locally produced artwork on display at The Mugshot, Bonnifield said.
