Ski racers earn solid results

Last week, the men and women of the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club’s Alpine ski team traveled to Winter Park, where the men raced two USSA Surefoot Colorado Ski Cup super-Gs and two giant slaloms, and the women raced two super-Gs. Athletes competed from Thursday to Sunday. Conditions were difficult, but despite soft snow and some frigid temperatures, the team returned to Steamboat with some great results.

In Thursday’s opening men’s giant slalom, Kevin Francis of the U.S. Ski Team won with a time of 1 minute, 54.69 seconds. Steamboat’s top finisher was Austin Johnson in seventh place, with a time of 1:57:42.

Cory McConnell finished 13th and Nick Kullas at 14th. Other Steamboat finishers included Jason McNeill (24), Ryan McConnell (30), Taylor Coe (36), Max Marno (39), Ryan Coe (41), Hig Roberts (45), Andrew White (61), James Schindler (63), Nelson Kane (68) and Mark Dennis (73).



Giant slalom racing continued Friday for the men. Evan Weiss won in 2:09:87. Three Steamboat athletes finished in the top 15: Kullas in 10th, Cory McConnell in 13th and Austin Johnson in 15th. Other Steamboat finishers on the difficult Winter Park course were Ryan McConnell (30), Hig Roberts (37), Britt Wohler (38), Ryan Coe (41), Jimmy Hostetler (55) and Mark Dennis (71).

With the start of the weekend and the arrival of the women, super-G racing commenced at Winter Park. Racing was chilly, but the snow was much improved from the previous days’ giant slaloms. Katie Hartman, racing for Team Summit, took a win with a time of 1:15:23. Steamboat’s top finisher was Mary Rachel Hostetter in eighth, with a time of 1:18:71. Other female Steamboat finishers included Shane McLean (16), Anna Marno (17), Cassady Roberts (21), Emily Sackett (24), Maria Hillenbrand (34), Caitlin Colgan (40), Victoria McVicker (41) and Jorid Halsnes (44).



The men raced after the women Saturday and also provided impressive results. Francis won the race with a time of 1:12:40, and Steamboat athletes were not far behind with Kullas finishing 12th at 1:14:20, and Austin Johnson 13th with a time of 1:14:27. Other Steamboat finishers included Cory McConnell (27), Max Marno (29), Ryan McConnell (37), Ryan Coe (42), Hig Roberts (48), James Schindler (62), Andrew White (72), Nelson Kane (74), Josh Fix (78), John Zinser (82) and Mark Dennis (86).

Sunday was another super-G and the final day of racing at Winter Park. Steamboat’s own Ann West won with a time of 1:17:80. Hostetter rounded out a strong top-15 showing for the Winter Sports Club with a fifth-place finish in 1:20:84. Shane McLean skied into eighth from a start position of 42nd (1:21:32), and Cassady Roberts finished 15th in a time of 1:22:63. Other finishers for the women included Anna Marno (19), Maria Hillenbrand (29), Emily Sackett (32), Jorid Halsnes (34), Caitlin Colgan (36), and Victoria McVicker (37).

The University of Denver’s Adam Cole won the men’s race with a time of 1:13:48. Kullas was Steamboat’s top competitor finishing in 14th with a time of 1:16:05. The top 30 included Steamboat’s Cory McConnell in 16th, Taylor Coe in 22nd and Ryan Coe in 30th. Other Steamboat finishers included Ryan McConnell (31), Hig Roberts (33), James Schindler (41), John Zinser (54), Nelson Kane (55) and Mark Dennis (61).

The next Colorado Ski Cup race will be the annual men’s and women’s Holiday Classic slalom races, Friday through Sunday at Howelsen Hill.
