— Holiday season is here. We are often bombarded with feasts and parties, holiday cookies and spiced eggnog, stuffing and gravy and pie, oh my!

Sarah Coleman brings years of personal health and fitness knowledge to the table. Currently training, coaching and managing at Steamboat CrossFit in beautiful Steamboat Springs, she provides flawless technique and a positive attitude. Taking fitness to new levels, she uses the outdoor environment, your living room or work space, as well as the gym to influence and push her clientele. We tend to overeat and are often too busy to get the exercise we need, and, for some reason, the holiday season seems to grow longer and longer each and every year. It wasn’t that long ago that the holidays were a three-week period from Thanksgiving to Christmas.

Now, however, it appears to start with bags and bags of Halloween candy and end somewhere around the overrated Valentines Day. On my holiday calendar that is almost half the whole damn year.

You say it every year, “not me, not this time … I will stay fit.” Yet every year the average American packs on extra pounds due to cold weather and holiday grazing.

By following just a few simple steps this year, you can keep the pounds off and maybe even take some off. Below are a few categories to get you started with your holiday fitness and food guide.

Not so stuffed stuffing: An eating guide

1) Fill your plate with mostly good stuff. Indulge in the goodies but make those the smaller portions on the plate. Keep your portions small and make the calories count.

2) Try fruit or dark chocolate instead of cookies or cake. Sometimes just a little sweet something can curb all dessert cravings. And, make it worth it. Fresh warm homemade cookies over store bought crap wins every time.

Move it and lose it: An exercise guide

1) Don’t be afraid of the cold. Get out and do something whether you cut down your own Christmas tree or try skate skiing for the first time.

2) Get your exercise early in the day. Think about it, once it’s done, it’s done, and you can stop thinking about it. The day fills up and before you know it, it’s bedtime. Wake up an hour early and hit the gym or take the dog for a walk. Treat yourself to a new class. It could be a new craving.

Little, and I mean little, black dress: A party guide

1) Decide on a calorie amount and stick with it. When you are at your max, stop eating. This allows you a lot of freedom (either eat or drink but not both). Think about it, if you want the wine, skip the cookie, and if you want the cheese, skip the lil smokies. This works with all sorts of food and libation choices as well.

2) Try to keep something in your hands. Suggestions: a glass of water to stay hydrated or your camera to take pictures of your slim little self can both help deter excessive snaking.

Happy holidays and happy healthy eating. Just eat smart and get your exercise in. Try to keep your normal routine. Indulge but only in moderation. It is after all, the season to celebrate.
