Santa making a stop in Yampa

Melinda Dudley

— Before boarding his sleigh to deliver toys and Christmas cheer to children across Routt County tonight, Santa Claus will make house calls to senior citizens in Yampa and take last-minute Christmas wishes from South Routt children at Yackey Park.

“The ‘Santa’s Coming!’ sign is already up, and everybody’s looking forward to it,” Yampa Town Trustee Karen Tussey said. “All the trees are lit, and there’s hot apple cider and hot chocolate. The kids all get to sit on Santa’s lap and tell him what they want for Christmas.”

Yampa usually gets a pretty good turnout for the annual Christmas Eve festivities, which begin at 6:30 p.m. at the town’s Christmas tree in Yackey Park, behind the Yampa-Egeria Museum, town employee Nora Phillips said.

Town staff and elected officials made homemade popcorn balls during the weekend and put together 125 candy bags Monday. The candy bags also include treats like oranges, gum, candy canes, peanuts and other old-fashioned candies, Tussey said.

Santa Claus will arrive at the park on a Yampa Fire Protection District fire engine and deliver the candy bags to children at the park.

After the town’s Christmas Eve party draws to a close, Santa will climb back aboard his fire engine sleigh and make a trip around town, delivering candy to elderly Yampa residents who were unable to attend the town’s celebration.

“He delivers Christmas cheer to all the seniors in town who can’t get out,” Tussey said.
