Romick’s photos show a creative eye for the West
Steamboat Springs — Jace Romick R Diamond Gallery at the Chief Theater, located in a room off the lobby at 813 Lincoln Ave., features Romick’s beautifully reproduced, large-format photographs in frames he custom builds to stand on their own as fine craft.
Romick has major collections, including closeups of classic cars showing the patina of age, as well as action photos comprising details of cowboy gear and tack.
“I feel like it’s a rodeo, mountain lifestyle,” he said of his collection.
Romick’s large, detailed reproductions of photographs — with subject matter ranging from aspen forests, wild stallions and vintage leather and wooden ski equipment — have an uncommonly tactile feel. To the viewer, it seems as if they could step into the aspen grove he captured near Steamboat Lake.
His images are represented in galleries in Telluride, Jackson, Wyo., Aspen and Vail, and after three decades of honing his sense of what the design market wants while operating his own gallery of furniture and decorative art, he was eager to have his own exhibition space in Steamboat again. Knowing his images (rarely printed smaller than 24 by 36 inches) had to stand out, he decided to elevate their presentation with custom frames he builds, drawing on his career as a furniture builder.
The work is presented in dark wood that has been scraped with an adze and in lightly corroded steel, all custom-built by the image maker.
“In addition to being a photographer, I consider myself to be a craftsman and designer,” Romick said.
Jace Romick R Diamond Gallery is open to the public anytime there is a special event underway in downtown Steamboat or by appointment. He can be reached at 970-846-8377 or firstname.lastname@example.org. Look for his web page, which is set to be online soon, at jaceromickgallery.com
