Rick DeVos: Welcome to Winter Carnival

Beginning as the organizing committee for the first Winter Carnival, the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club has maintained the Winter Carnival as a service to the community since 1914. We are pleased to host the 97th annual Winter Carnival, beginning Feb. 3 and concluding Feb. 7. This year's carnival theme is "Living the Dream."

Winter Carnival has something for everyone. I truly hope you enjoy this multiday event and get a chance to participate in or be a spectator of the racing, ski jumping, biathlon, parade, street events and the spectacular Night Extravaganza featuring the legendary Lighted Man along with an incredible fireworks display. This Winter Carnival supplement features a complete schedule of events, or you can visit http://www.sswsc.org.

In celebration of the 2010 Winter Olympics also taking place this month, Steamboat Springs will host an Olympian Send-off on Feb. 5. The event will help the community recognize the dozen or so SSWSC athletes who will represent Steamboat Springs in Vancouver, British Columbia. This year's Winter Carnival grand marshals are Nancy and Jim Spillane and Jeanne and Dennis Lodwick, the parents of two of our local Olympians, Johnny Spillane and Todd Lodwick. Johnny and Todd are Nordic Combined world champions.

In addition to providing numerous fun-filled activities for locals and visitors, the Winter Carnival serves as an annual fundraiser for the SSWSC. Winter Carnival button proceeds are the primary source of funds within the event. All spectators and event participants are encouraged to purchase and wear their official "Gold Medal" Winter Carnival button and "Live the Dream" with us while supporting the Winter Carnival and the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club. Buttons can be purchased at the Steamboat Springs Chamber Resort Association, SSWSC, a variety of other local businesses and at most Winter Carnival events.

Lastly, I must acknowledge our title sponsor, One Steamboat Place, and the following high-level sponsors that help make the Winter Carnival possible: the city of Steamboat Springs, Yampa Valley Bank, Native Excavating and the Steamboat Ski and Resort Corp. The enduring success of this famous winter celebration is because of the overwhelming support of the entire community, including volunteers, event participants, spectators, guests to the Yampa Valley, lodging properties and business partners. The Winter Carnival is truly a unique, community-based event.

I hope you enjoy the 97th Winter Carnival. Thanks for the support.
