Rick DeVos: Welcome to Winter Carnival
Beginning as the organizing committee for the first Winter Carnival, the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club has maintained the carnival as a service to the community since 1914. We are pleased to host the 98th Winter Carnival from Feb. 2 to 6. This year’s theme is Building Athletes … Building Individuals.
Winter Carnival has something for everyone. I truly hope you enjoy this multiday event and get a chance to participate in or be a spectator of the racing, the ski jumping, the biathlon, the parade with Steamboat’s skiing high school band, the famous street events down Lincoln Avenue and the spectacular Night Extravaganza featuring the legendary Lighted Man along with an incredible fireworks display. This Winter Carnival supplement features a complete schedule of events, or you can visit http://www.sswsc.org.
In addition to providing numerous fun-filled activities for residents and visitors, the Winter Carnival serves as an annual fundraising opportunity for the Winter Sports Club. Winter Carnival button sales proceeds are the primary source of funds within the event. All spectators and event participants are encouraged to purchase and wear their official Winter Carnival button and contribute to the youths of our community while supporting the Winter Carnival and the Winter Sports Club. Buttons can be purchased at the Steamboat Springs Chamber Resort Association, the Winter Sports Club, other local businesses and most events.
Lastly, I must acknowledge the sponsors that help make Winter Carnival possible: The city of Steamboat Springs, Yampa Valley Bank, Native Excavating and Steamboat Ski and Resort Corp. The enduring success of this famous winter celebration is a result of the overwhelming support of the entire community, including volunteers, event participants, spectators, guests to the Yampa Valley, lodging properties and business partners. Winter Carnival is truly a unique, community-based event.
I hope you enjoy the 98th Winter Carnival. Thanks for the support.

I don’t know about you, but I’ve never been big on science fiction in any form. Sure, I love the stars and space when it’s in photos or the news followed by the letters N-A-S-A,…
