Sake to me

I’ve been to a lot of parties throughout the years.

Some have been better than others, but every party experience has left me with either a memory or a good story to tell.

I’ve attended all the heaven and hell and fire and ice parties. I’ve been to a college fraternity “graffiti” party, a Big Lebowski-theme party and the be-your-own-theme party. I’ve been to too many birthday, bachelorette, bowling, hair-cutting and burn-your-ex-boyfriend’s photo parties.

Last week’s Sushi Party 7 might have taken the cake.

Old School Steamboat was in the house as many longtime Steamboat residents and a few new faces crowded around plates of homemade crab Rangoon, pot stickers, crab dip and of course, sushi.

For a long time I didn’t understand sushi – raw fish and seaweed? No thank you. I’m definitely a rare steak kind of girl.

As I’ve matured, I have come to realize that sushi, when made properly with a little love and fresh ingredients, is a food of the gods.

The sushi I sampled at the party was out of this world.

Watching our Sushi Party 7 host and chef set out new plates of the stuff was hilarious because people were jockeying for position, carefully balancing ramekins of soy sauce and wasabi and holding chopsticks in their teeth.

Our strategy was to make one person retrieve as many rolls as possible without looking greedy or desperate. I’m sure we looked greedy and desperate, but we couldn’t get over what we were being handed for the measly $10 donation we all paid to attend.

Best dinner I’ve had at a house party in Steamboat. Plus, there was sake. Enough said.
