Steamboat Springs — Oak Creek will celebrate Labor Day this weekend with events and activities that bring the community together.

“There is a strong sense of tradition here especially with this event,” said Julie Hoff, who is in her fifth year of coordinating the Coal Queen competition. “In South Routt, I feel like we are able to make progress and have change but still maintain a strong sense of tradition and honor the past that built this (town) to what it is today.”

The four-day celebration kickoffs Friday with an art show, an outdoor showing of a movie in Decker Park, a Hippie Pub Crawl at local bars and live music with T-Bird and Train Time.

Events on Saturday and Sunday range from a fashion show, hot dog-eating contest, hula hoop contest, the annual Coal Queen contest, a comedy show with Hippie Man and live music with The Wranglers, a country band from Arkansas. There will also be the annual cake walk, “Chicken Sh*t Bingo,” a horseshoe tournament, an archery contest and a live auction, which will raise money for future Labor Day events.

Then on Monday, there will be the popular 6K “No Fun Run” starting at 10 a.m. at Town Hall in addition to a parade down Main Street, which start at 11 a.m. The Oak Creek Tracks and Trails Museum, 129 and 130 E. Main St., will allow attendees to tour the museum and learn more about the town’s past. There will also be a number of field games taking place throughout the day and vendors offering food, crafts, art, jewelry and more.

“I think the line-up this year will outweigh last year not because of the new things introduced but because we are able to provide more vendors,” said Becky Wisecup, Labor Day event committee vice president and secretary. “People can sidewalk shop and see some really unique crafts, meet new people and just have some fun. I like that aspect of this event, being able to provide that for the community.”

Nikki Knoebel, Labor Day event committee president, said this four-day celebration is one of Oak Creek’s biggest weekends.

“We are celebrating the labor of all workers, and everyone works hard and that’s a reason to celebrate before we get into our winter season,” Knoebel said. “I just love my community, and I love putting on these events and to see families and friends get together and celebrate. It’s great for the community.”
