New Town Challenge ski, snowboard park competition starts today

— There are Town Challenge events for mountain biking, and there are events for Alpine skiing.

That got Jon Casson, Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club snowboard program coordinator, wondering why there weren’t any events for skiers and snowboarders who live in the terrain park. So he helped create the Steamboat Park Challenge, a four-date collection of performances that will help crown the best in Steamboat park riding.

The first competition, one of two big airs, is at 6 p.m. today at Howelsen Hill. Registration starts at 5 p.m. and costs $20.

“It’s a celebration of park riding and freestyle skiing,” Casson said. “We’ve been working on it for a couple of months. It was one of those ideas where the first conversation was on a bike ride. It’s just evolved since then.”

More events will follow. A slopestyle event is March 6 at Steamboat Ski Area, another big air is March 10 at Howelsen and a final slopestyle is March 20 at the ski area.

“We want to get people who are riding every day, having fun in the park,” Casson said. “We want to put them in a casually competitive format, and maybe they’ll win a prize or two, and maybe bragging rights as the town champion.”
