NBC’s Today Show visits Steamboat; segments aired this morning

— Steamboat Springs got a little national exposure Thursday morning when NBC’s “Today Show” morning program aired a segment shot in Northwest Colorado and featuring several local residents.

The 3 1/2-minute segment, reported by NBC News’ Tom Costello, a former Colorado resident, explored winter survival tips. Among those featured in the segment were Dr. David Wilkinson, of Yampa Valley Medical Center, John Hernandez, of Steamboat Snowmobile Tours, and Riley Polumbus and Russ Sanford, of Routt County Search and Rescue.

Polumbus, Sanford and other Search and Rescue volunteers built a snow cave to demonstrate how quickly folks stranded in the backcountry can create a structure capable of maintaining an interior temperature of 40 degrees.

Costello also filmed a segment about winter driving tips with the Bridgestone Winter Driving School in Steamboat. That segment aired a couple of weeks ago.
