Nasty weather cuts Holiday Classic short

— Mother Nature isn’t in a giving spirit this week — or maybe she’s simply being too generous to Steamboat Ski Area.

On Monday, Deb Armstrong, the Alpine competitive program director for the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club, said the final races of the 2010 Surefoot Steamboat Holiday Classic at Steamboat Ski Area have been cancelled.

“The races were cancelled because of snow surface conditions,” Armstrong said Monday.

She said the huge amount of snow that fell Monday and the forecast for more snow Tuesday night factored into the decision. Armstrong said the snow and the uncertain surface under the snow would have made it dangerous for the men’s giant slalom race, which was scheduled for today. The women’s giant slalom race, which had been moved from Monday to today because of weather, also has been cancelled.

The Surefoot Steamboat Holiday Classic is an FIS-level race for skiers trying to climb the ladder to the U.S. national team, and a chance for top-level collegiate racers to pick up experience and points during the holidays.

The Steamboat races also have drawn U.S. Ski Team members in the past who are looking to sharpen their skills.

The weather isn’t expected to impact today’s U.S. Freestyle Ski Team selections that are scheduled to take place on Mayer’s Mogul Run on Voo Doo or the final day of the Race to the Cup NorAm Alpine snowboarding races at Howelsen Hill.
