Steamboat Springs — Routt County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested a 33-year-old Steamboat Springs man Friday afternoon on suspicion of nine charges, eight of which are felonies.

Hans Conrad Cartin was arrested on suspicion of two counts of fifth-degree felony possession of a dangerous weapon; second-degree felony as a special offender; third-degree felony distribution of a Schedule II controlled substance; two counts of fifth-degree felony possession of weapons by a previous offender; two counts of sixth-degree felony possession of weapons by a previous offender; and possession of drug paraphernalia.

A 10-man team, including members of the Sheriff’s Office SWAT team, entered a house in the 30000 block of Routt County Road 14C at about 3:45 p.m. Friday to execute an arrest and search warrant that originated with the Steamboat Springs Police Department, Sheriff’s Office Investigator Ken Klinger said.

Officers arrested Cartin without incident, Klinger said. Inside the house, officers found about 50 grams of methamphetamine, drug paraphernalia and “a series of weapons,” including three illegal rifles and one .45-caliber handgun, Klinger said.

Some of those weapons had been altered from semi-automatic to fully automatic, and none of the weapons had federally required serial numbers. Because Cartin has a previous felony charge out of California, he is considered a special offender, Klinger said, and more charges could be pending.

The Bureau of “Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms has been contacted, and they’re going to come up and take a look at these weapons next week, so there might be federal charges pending,” Klinger said. Cartin also is suspected of drug distribution because of his possession of what Klinger described as a “sizeable” amount of methamphetamine. Klinger said there was not evidence of methamphetamine production in the house where Cartin was arrested.

The investigation that led to Cartin’s arrest originated with a Steamboat Springs Police Department investigation into the theft of a flat-screen television. Two other people were under investigation in that case. Police asked the Sheriff’s Office to execute the arrest and search warrants because the people under investigation lived outside city limits. Sheriff’s Office deputies recovered the stolen television at the house where they arrested Cartin.

On Sunday, Cartin was being held at the Routt County Jail on a $50,000 bond, with an advisement scheduled for Monday morning.

Burglary at The Click

Some employees of The Click snowboard shop worked Sunday afternoon to clean up after the store was burglarized some time Saturday night or Sunday morning.

The glass on the store’s front door was broken, and merchandise was missing, store manager Philip Johnston said. Johnston was not sure how much or what exactly had been taken and was working on an inventory of the remaining merchandise early Sunday afternoon.

Officer Sam Silva of the Steamboat Springs Police Department said the burglary is under investigation.
