Sailors need to cut loose against Glenwood

Luke Graham

— This is going to be fun.

Fun like we might see 100 points combined.

We’ll definitely see two of the best young quarterbacks in the state, and one who might be the best player in the state.

We’ll see two offenses that can score from anywhere at anytime with any player.

It’s Glenwood Springs versus Steamboat Springs football, Friday night in Glenwood Springs, and it might be the best game of the year.

Glenwood is blowing teams away. The team has thumped league stalwarts Eagle Valley and Palisade by a combined score of 82-34.

Glenwood junior Dakota Stonehouse – how’s that for a football name? – might be the best quarterback in the state. Friday night against Eagle Valley, he had 339 yards passing and five touchdowns. In the first half.

He’s easily the best player Steamboat has seen all year. Glenwood is probably the best team Steamboat’s seen all year.

That said, Steamboat is the Western Slope League team most likely to beat Glenwood.

The two teams are a lot alike.

Glenwood has Stonehouse and Steamboat has Austin Hinder, a sophomore who is just as dangerous and important to his team as Stonehouse.

The defenses are undersized, fast, aggressive and most important, really effective.

Glenwood has six players with touchdown catches. Steamboat has five.

Glenwood has a stable of players at the skill positions. Ditto for Steamboat.

If that’s not enough, the game is littered with playoff implications.

A win and Steamboat is essentially in the playoffs. A win and Steamboat is in a three-way tie for first place in the league, with a ridiculously complicated tiebreaker.

Conversely, a Glenwood win would essentially wrap up a league title, an undefeated season (after Steamboat, the Demons will have remaining games against two-win teams Moffat County and Delta) and a No. 1 seed heading into the state playoffs.

How can Steamboat do it when the closest a team has come to Glenwood all year is 13 points?

First, Steamboat will be the most athletic team Glenwood has seen all year. Second, the Steamboat defense has the athletes to put pressure on Stonehouse. Lastly, have you seen this offense? It’s scary good. It can get in a shootout and win.

Will Steamboat win? That will play out Friday night. But this corner says yes.

Steamboat 51, Glenwood 50.
