Local ski racer making most of summer break

John F. Russell

— Local ski racer Jenny Allen is making the most of her summer vacation.

Thanks to a strong showing at a camp in May, Allen was invited to join the U.S. Ski Team at Oregon’s Mount Hood for a national level development camp.

That camp began Monday and will offer Allen six days of skiing with top athletes and coaches from the U.S. team. Allen is the only woman at the camp that is not a named member of the team.

“This is a huge accomplishment for her,” ski coach Anje Worrell. “This is a big step in the right direction, and if she can perform well at this camp and carry that into next season she will be on her way.”

Rick DeVos, Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club executive director, said this is a major honor for Allen, who exemplifies what the Winter Sports Club is all about.

“She’s a great athlete and a wonderful representative for Steamboat Springs,” DeVos said. “This couldn’t have happened for a nicer person, or a nicer family.”

Worrell thinks the experience of skiing with the members of the U.S. team and working with top national team coaches is exactly what the young Steamboat skier needs at this point of her skiing career.

“I think that Jenny is going to realize that she’s just as good, if not better, than the other skiers at the camp,” Worrell said. “It’s going to be a big boost for her confidence and I think we are going to see that on the slopes next winter.”
