— Photographer Ken Lee's Gallery 11 is closing today in downtown Steamboat Springs.

Lee owns the gallery and the building at 908 Lincoln Ave. with partner Maureen Totman, of the Hacienda Collection. According to the Routt County Assessor's Office, Totman-Lee LLC bought the building in May 2007 for $390,000. Lee said Wednesday that the closure is for financial reasons.

The partners are selling the building, which is listed for $420,000 through Old Town Realty.

Totman said she had a closing sale in Gallery 11 last year for Hacienda Collection furniture, a business she removed from the gallery and is maintaining through a website.

Lee is having a sale for his framed and unframed photographs until today's closure.

"We're just trying to get rid of as much inventory as possible," Lee said.

That effort appeared to be working Wednesday, as "Sold" signs hung next to many photographs on display at the downtown gallery.

"It's been great," Ken Lee's wife, Pat Lee, said about the closing sale. "We are grateful to our customers — they've responded really well."

The closure has created a rush of business for their framing shop in the back of the gallery space, Pat Lee said.

"As soon as (customers) found out we were closing, we got hit," Pat Lee said Wednesday. "A lot of framing jobs. Everything has to be done by tomorrow."

Ken Lee said he's "not getting out of photography, by any means."

"I'll be teaching photography workshops in the Steamboat area, and I'll be doing a number of weekend workshops throughout the summer," he said.

Those workshops include a multiday llama trek through the Flat Tops Wilderness Area in the second week of August in conjunction with Yampatika, and a fall color workshop, Lee said.

He said his work would be displayed at RED Contemporary in the Sheraton Steamboat Resort and online at

"I really enjoyed the time that I had at the gallery, meeting the different people that came through and talking with them about photography and art," Lee said about Gallery 11. "That's the thing I'm going to miss the most, the interaction with the people."

Pat Lee said there has been interest from potential buyers for the building. She said she did two showings Tuesday and two Wednesday.
