‘Jeopardy!’ tryout: A test of my wits and possibly my sanity
July 15, 2014
Steamboat Springs — There's something bizarre about seeing someone on TV and then meeting them in person.
No, I'm not talking about hanging out at a trendy nightclub in New York and seeing Jimmy Fallon pop in all of a sudden, throwing into disarray your whole concept of reality, depending on whether or not the latest episode of "The Tonight Show" has already aired.
What I'm talking about is my experience watching "Jeopardy!" last week with Hayden resident Melinda Dudley at the center podium. If you didn't get a chance to see her, she did a great job on the show, easily the most exuberant of the three contestants that night, hindered on her quest for victory by a few incorrect answers, a competitor who could do no wrong and a Final Jeopardy! question so easy there was no way to strategize a come-from-behind win.
I chanced to meet Melinda a few days after the episode had become public at the live trivia at The Tap House, and admittedly, I was a little starstruck.
Also, I was a little envious.
You see, just a couple weeks ago, I set out to follow my own dreams of game show glory by auditioning for "Jeopardy!" yet again. Having tried out for the college show in 2006 and the regular version in 2011, I figured third time would be the charm as I headed out to Las Vegas, the city I selected way back when taking the online test earlier this year.

I'll spare you the details of the trip as a whole, not because it was too adult for the prudent-minded but rather because it all amounted to a lot of frustrating transportation woes, blistering heat and impulse decisions that emptied my wallet without having any fun, making it the worst time I've ever had in Sin City.
