— Two things Yampa Valley residents never seem to get enough of are spectacular views and pushing themselves to the limit.

The eighth annual Howelsen Hill 8-Miler will accommodate both of those needs Saturday, as participants will race up and down Howelsen Hill's network of trails, experiencing picturesque views along the way.

The race starts at the base of Howelsen at Olympian Hall, and the course includes a series of trails that lead to the top of the Emerald rock quarry before finishing back down at the starting line.

"It's a good race for locals to get out there," said Walter Magill, the 2013 Howelsen Hill 8-Miler race director.

He added that the race welcomes participants from all over Colorado.

"I like to have the new people we get here … just to introduce people to Howelsen," Magill said.

The race tries to make that introduction available to everyone by offering a 4-mile race as well. Both races begin at 8 a.m. Registration is $25.

The time to beat from last year is 54:41 for the 8-miler and 25:01 for the 4-miler.

It is the Steamboat Springs Running Series' first trail race of the year and usually is held in the middle of July. However, this year the event has been moved up to June 22 to provide recovery time for athletes in the series.

"We moved it up to give time between races on our calendar," Magill said.

Registration for the event is open exclusively online until 8 p.m. Friday. Race-day registration is available from 7 to 7:50 a.m. at Olympian Hall.
