Mama's Cookin serves up a hip-hop, blues and cosmic vibe
Zebuel Early, singer and guitarist for Mama’s Cookin, said his mother is a very good cook.
“My mama is the most amazing cook in the whole world,” Early said. “Her idea of eating vegetables is eating green beans wrapped in bacon.”
Early grew up on Southern cooking in Memphis, and he remains, at heart, a Southerner.
“I always have my Southern charm,” Early said. “I open the door for ladies, say ‘yes ma’am’ and ‘no ma’am’ and have manners.”
You can hear a Southern slang and themes in Mama’s Cookin’s lyrics, yet its image incorporates more of an urban feel.
Its sound is Delta blues blended with soul, rock and elements of hip-hop.
“We kind of have a smoothed out type of image,” Early said. “We’re weird because we have a hip-hop kind of vibe to our image, but we play the blues. A lot of the bands that come out of Colorado are jam bands and bluegrass bands, but we’re really not.”
Mama’s Cookin is based in Gunnison and Crested Butte, where living in a mountain isolates you from the benefits of urban life.
“I miss the music scene of a city,” Early said. “I like going to record shops and shopping for vinyl, and I miss good food. We definitely need to make trips to get new clothes and go to music stores to check out guitars I can never afford to buy.”
If the band had the money, there are a few upgrades Early would appreciate on the tour bus.
“I would love to throw a hot tub in the back of the bus and have : martinis delivered by girls in bikinis,” he said. “It would also be nice to have back-up singers and Derek Trucks playing slide guitar full time in our band.”
Hot tubs seem to be a common theme for Mama’s Cookin’s visits to Steamboat Springs.
“We try to poach a hot tub every time we go to Steamboat,” Early said. “So be on the look out.”
