Homecoming week under way at SSHS

Steamboat students celebrate with dress-up days, other activities

Steamboat Springs High School seniors, from right, Hannah Ramirez, Kylee Swiggart, Ally Wetzler and Jayde Mattox work on the senior homecoming float Saturday at TIC.

— Within the walls of a garage at TIC headquarters on a snowy Monday, Steamboat Springs High School seniors taped pieces of cardboard together into the shape of a rocket ship. A small group of seniors and parents decorated the ship while others painted a second ship that will be attached to a forklift.

There’s a reason for the work – the high school’s homecoming week is in full swing, and the handiwork of the seniors will take to downtown Steamboat at 2 p.m. Friday for the annual homecoming parade.

This year’s homecoming theme is “outer space,” and the week includes dress-up days and other activities. Each day of the week also gives students the opportunity to compete against other classes by dressing up to win spirit points. On Monday, the dress-up theme was neon; today it’s Star Wars; Wednesday is Men in Black; Thursday is a color war between classes; and Friday is spirit day.

Other activities during the week include a powder-puff football game at 7:30 p.m. today and a bonfire from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Brent Romick Rodeo Arena.

One of the most highly anticipated events, the annual teacher skit, will be shown to students Friday before they are released for the parade. Students will gather in the auditorium for a few laughs before they head out to their individual floats. During the assembly, teachers show skits they have been preparing secretly the past few weeks. They will include parodies, songs and dances to entertain the students.

Sports during homecoming week are the emphasis for many students. The volleyball team plays Glenwood at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, and the football team plays at 7 p.m. Friday against Rifle. The homecoming dance wraps up the week’s events from 9 p.m. to midnight Saturday.
