Hayden wrestling shows well at state
April 6, 2009
Ryan Domson led the way as the Hayden Middle School wrestling team wrapped up its season Friday and Saturday at the state tournament in Denver.
Hayden sent a large squad of 16 wrestlers to the tournament, and Domson, with a second-place finish in the 135-pound bracket, was one of three to place.
“The kids wrestled really well. We’re really proud of them,” Hayden coach Dallas Robinson said. “It was really tough competition, but our kids were extraordinary.”
Domson was joined in medaling by Nate Speech, who was fourth at 152 pounds, and T-Lane Mazzola in fifth at 95 pounds.
“Just to have those three guys up there was great,” Robinson said. “There were a lot of fantastic athletes up there. They looked like some of the best wrestlers you see at the high school level.”
A strong performance Friday had the squad in a great position Saturday morning and set the stage for the weekend.

“It was great. All the kids came out well, and we got a lot of pins,” Robinson said.
Domson put together the best run, but he couldn’t quite pull off a win in the championship match, falling, 10-4, to Ethan Wright, of Fowler.
“It was really close,” Robinson said. “He’d come off a lot of matches during the day and had a little fatigue and didn’t wrestle as well as he normally does. Still, he wrestled his heart out.”
Although team results weren’t available Sunday, Robinson said his squad did achieve one goal. It scored more points than Hotchkiss, the only team that finished ahead of the Tigers in the regional tournament.
“All the kids wrestled extraordinary,” he said. “It was a different kind of wrestling out there, a high level. We went out and held our own.”
