Hayden High School Principal Troy Zabel discusses the school's homecoming week activities. Monday's theme was "Angels and Devils."

— Hayden High School students are showing their Tiger spirit during this week’s homecoming festivities, engaging in class competition and preparing their floats for Friday’s parade.

Many Hayden alumni are expected to attend Friday’s events, which include the homecoming parade, pep rally, football game and the presentation of the homecoming royalty at halftime, high school Principal Troy Zabel said.

Hayden High School will have a modified class schedule Friday morning to accommodate the homecoming parade, which begins at Hayden Valley Elementary School at approximately 1:20 p.m., after float judging. Each class is building its own float after school this week.

Elementary and middle school students also will take part in the parade festivities, Zabel said.

One spirit-building element of homecoming week is class competition, said art teacher Susan Koehler, co-sponsor of the student council.

Students earn tickets for participating in each dress-up day, with rivalry-themed ensembles such as cowboys and Indians, and lunch activities including tug-of-war and a pie-eating contest. Tickets are entered into raffles for prize drawings as well as totaled up by class.

At the end of homecoming week, the class with the most “Tiger spirit” wins possession of the school’s spirit stick and a pizza party, Koehler said.

Zabel, clad in a pair of devil horns for Tuesday’s “Angels and Devils” dress-up theme, said he has seen good participation so far this week from both students and staff.
