Halloween events planned for weekend

— Prizes for the best Halloween costumes in South Routt will be awarded Saturday night at the South Routt Parent Teacher Organization’s 16th annual Halloween carnival.

In addition to the always-popular haunted house and game booths, the PTO added a costume parade and competition to Yampa’s Halloween festivities this year, said South Routt Early Learning Center teacher Lisa Constine.

“We have a bunch of great prizes for all ages, which we’re going to award right after the parade,” Constine said.

The costume parade will begin at 6 p.m., and the top three costumes will be recognized in preschool, school-age, junior and adult age groups, Constine said.

Carnival festivities begin at 4 p.m. Saturday at South Routt Elementary School, with plenty of food and games.

Halloween festivities will get a jump-start in Steamboat Springs, with the opening of the SKY Club’s 10th annual Screamboat Chamber of Horror! tonight at Colorado Mountain College.

Representatives of the Steamboat Springs Chamber Resort Association’s Sustainable Business Program will be visiting kindergartners and first-graders at Routt County schools next week, distributing reusable tote bags as part of a new “Green Halloween” program.

School visits will be made next week at the Lowell Whiteman Primary School, Christian Heritage School, Soda Creek and Strawberry Park elementary schools, South Routt Elementary School and Hayden Valley Elementary School. Additional tote bags will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis beginning Wednesday at the Chamber’s Visitor Center in Steamboat Springs.

“We hope to see lots and lots of ours and other reusable bags this year on the Halloween Stroll,” Chamber spokeswoman Molly Killien said.
