Steamboat Springs — For some of us, mud season can be a rough go. We cannot afford what the lavish paychecks of summer once allowed. Yes, I am a seasonal employee of multiple facets here in town. Why be afraid of having a balance of $13.37 in the bank account this time of year? When happy hour and the back porch scene exhaust themselves, there’s still a tier of night life beyond.

We can have a good time, we can hang. Here’s an outlook on the free live music schedule coming up here in Steamboat, and the mud season blues we can all avoid.

Kicking off the immediate local schedule this Friday at Steamboat’s new premier pizza bar, Colorado High 5, local DJ Steezy nickS throws it down with a marathon, four hour set, fresh off his summer hiatus and ready to burst.

“Mud season shouldn’t be so hard for the people who make this town run,” he said. “If I had a choice, all of my shows would be without a cover charge.”

Spoken like a true, hard working local!

Also showcasing themselves in Steamboat this weekend, for the first time, will be Bond and Bentley at Schmiggity’s on Saturday. A rocky mix of blues, funk and soul bring the four piece together making quite the treat for the price of free-ninety-nine. This being my top stop for the weekend I’d highly suggest giving these guys a shot.

For the ambitious, head over to Old Town Pub afterwards and check out Greenhouse Lounge. This trio combines the computer based production of a DJ with rock guitar leads, staggering sample manipulation and heavy analog bass accompanied by a live drummer. A late night treat that’ll one-up any other competition in town.

Next Saturday, Oct. 3, renowned local DJ Dra-La will be spinning at the Colorado High 5 Bar, with once-local lyricist Dassaro. After moving to Denver to pursue his passion for rapping Dassaro returns to Steamboat for a one-off performance with the help of an old friend, Dra-La. Let’s get out there and support our own! If you fill up on speaker blast and lyrics to boast about, check out Brewfish and Zolopht at Schmiggitys. Out of SoCal these guys burn one down to a roots, rock, reggae style you’ll get your fix for free.

Rounding off the more immediate outlook we have none other than The New Master Sounds coming to Old Town Pub on Oct. 15. If you’ve saved your almost non-existent funds correctly It’ll be worth your while. At $15 you can be part of possibly the biggest show coming to Steamboat this fall.

These Brits can jam. With their funk, jam style oozing from their speakers it’s almost as if you were listening to Buddy Guy or any other famed blues musician at five times the speed. This is what I’m looking forward to, and you should too.

This season, don’t stress, save your pennies and hopefully I’ll see you at a bar this coming month, sampling the free water from bar to bar.
