DOW licenses available online

The Colorado Division of Wildlife offered online applications for elk licenses for the first time in 2004.

That year, 86,000 people used the service.

This year, the number climbed to 126,000.

But, with 480,000 total applications, the Internet service still hasn’t seen as much use as DOW officials would like.

DOW license administration manager Henrietta Turner said that in 2004, the DOW didn’t advertise the system heavily because it wanted to make sure it had all the kinks worked out.

She said the lack of public knowledge and people’s wariness of trying something new were responsible for only 86,000 people applying for licenses online.

Online applications are more convenient for customers and the DOW, Turner said.

The online service won’t allow applications with mistakes, such as incorrect hunting units, to be processed, so hunters are virtually guaranteed their applications will be complete and correct when they submit them online.

“I like having the applications online,” Turner said.

Leftover and over-the-counter licenses also are available for purchase at the division’s Web site,
