DJ Logic to bring innovative style to Steamboat on Saturday

— Listing recent, current or upcoming live and studio projects, turntable artist DJ Logic counts off a dizzying span of musicians.

Carly Simon; O.A.R.; Kyle Hollingsworth, of The String Cheese Incident; John Popper, of Blues Traveler; Steve Molitz, of Particle; and Medeski, Martin and Wood come to mind as he describes projects with top names in jazz, pop, hip-hop, funk, jam and rock music.

The everyman of the turntable, DJ Logic, born Jason Kibler, has made a name based on his ability to morph into any musical style, picking up on the cues of generations worth of music through decades of listening to records.

He comes to The Tap House Sports Grill on Saturday for a solo set. Local musician DJ Also Starring is slated to open the show.

Tickets are $10 at the door.

Now known for his open-minded approach to melding a hip-hop art form with just about any style of music, DJ Logic started working on his ever-evolving style as a hobby in the 1980s. The more he experimented, the more that hobby became his life.

Audience response to his innovative style wasn't always positive, he said. These days, audience response is no problem.

"It took a while — that was the test, you know. It's just vibing to the audience, as well as me painting a picture. When I'm hearing things and hearing ideas, sometimes it's on the fly, and sometimes I already have it kind of set. (I'm) just trying to blend something good," he said.

When he reaches into his jazz collection during a solo show, Logic likes to play off jazz musicians and groups including Herbie Hancock, Weather Report, and Medeski, Martin and Wood to create an eclectic set of hip-hop, funk and jazz, he said.

An upcoming solo project features some of Logic's favorite guests and draws from his growing collection of musical tastes.

"I like to just keep doing my homework and see what's going on and hearing what's going on and going to the clubs and checking out new bands and meeting new musicians … (and) just being a DJ … going into a record store and picking up some new music and checking out new music for creative ideas," he said.

Logic played a set at The Tap House at the end of December and is looking forward to his return to the venue Saturday, he said.
