Chix with Stix off to undefeated start
January 7, 2010
One of the advantages of women's competitive hockey in Steamboat Springs is its consistency. The majority of this year's Chix with Stix team has been playing together for at least six years. It shows in its passing game, puck control and teamwork.
And it shows in the team's current record. The Chix are undefeated, 6-0, recording 27 goals and only one goal against.
The team resumes play at 10 p.m. Friday in Fort Collins, when the team plays the only other undefeated team in its B1 division, the Northern Colorado Comets. The teams also play at 6:45 p.m. Saturday.
"We're playing very well as a team; everything is falling into place," Chix captain Cathy Wiedemer said. "Everyone is clicking; every shift is very effective."
Adding to the team's depth this year is Shannon Forbes, who recently moved to Steamboat Springs from Craig. Also, new assistant coaches Mark Bucksen and Zach Murphy have joined head coach Tom Shorland.
The Chix ended the 2008-09 season with a loss in the B1 division championship game. However, the Chix started this season with momentum, having defended their title at the Breckenridge Oktoberfest tournament in September.
