Book review: Wonderful teen novel debut

“The Red Queen” by Victoria Aveyard

In a world where the color of your blood means everything, Mare has known only hard work and hardship.

Since her brothers are off to the front lines of war and her younger sister is working as an apprentice to a seamstress, Mare does what she can to help out her family by stealing. She has seen firsthand what the all powerful Silver Bloods do to the lonely Red Bloods. She will do anything to save her best friend, Kilorn, from his own conscription.

With her own impending conscription, Mare finds herself in league with the Scarlet Guard, who are working to take down the Silver Bloods.

Through unforeseen events and the help of Cal, who may or may not be a friend, she finds herself as a palace employee. Thrown into the middle of the biggest Silver Blood event, Mare is then brought in front of the king who changes her status to long lost Silver Princess.

How far will she take this masquerade as something she’s not, or is she part of the Silver Bloods?

“The Red Queen” is a wonderful teen debut with an addictive story line.

Aveyard has a vivid and delightful writing style that just brings you into the story and doesn’t let you go until the end. This is set to be a trilogy, so there is more to come, which is fantastic because she leaves you hanging.
