Big Lebowski Festival comes to Steamboat Springs

Luke Graham

— There aren’t rules or guidelines to a Lebowski festival. Just mottos to follow.

The Dude always abides.

Never mess with the Jesus.

The rug ties the room together.

Mark it zero, because this is bowling, not Vietnam, and there are rules in bowling.

With it enters Steamboat Springs’ inaugural Big Lebowski Festival, set for 7 p.m. Friday at the Chief Theater.

Tickets are $20 and are available at All That Jazz and at the door.

“I have found that either you are a ‘Big Lebowski’ fan,” Chief Theater Executive Director Scott Parker said, “or you have not seen the movie.”

The event will include live music by Easy Pieces, a Wii bowling tournament, a costume party and contest, White Russian specials and all things Lebowski.

The movie will screen on both screens with the band in the big theater. Two bars will be set up with Wii bowling in the lounge.

Prizes include gift certificates and services to various places across town.

When Parker took over as executive director, he said he wanted to bring different events to the Chief Theater and initially had mentioned doing a Lebowski festival.

The idea percolated and finally became an idea, something Parker said fits right in with Steamboat.

“One of the big events that I wanted to produce was a Big Lebowski Festival,” he said. “People love the movie, and if there was ever a laid-back town in which to make it happen, that town is Steamboat Springs.”
