Best Radio Station: 100.5 The River
Local radio station 100.5 The River has an innovative take on classic rock.
The station, founded in June of last year, dives deep into the archives of iconic artists like Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones and The Beatles to bring listeners a playlist of hidden gems and legendary hits alike.
“Most classic rock stations probably have about 500 songs in their library at any given time, and we have about four to five times that,” explains John Johnston, The River’s operations manager.
That’s more than 2,000 songs in The River’s repertoire.
“And we keep adding more music,” adds Brian Harvey, general manager of Steamboat Radio, which operates the station. “It’s a pretty extensive playlist.”
Both agree that, while their listenership skews toward the older generation, the station transcends any particular age demographic. The River is tailored, simply, to music lovers.
“At the end of the day, we like to say it’s for anybody who likes classic rock in Steamboat,” Johnston says.
It’s this approach that helped The River land this year’s Best Radio Station title.
The River is able to maintain its diverse listenership by emphasizing the local community. Radio personalities such as Rich Dalton provide listeners with the local news and personal flair not provided by other such other platforms as satellite radio.
“That’s the most important thing — keeping it local,” Harvey says.
Another unique feature: The River plays only eight minutes of ads per hour, as opposed to the nearly 20 minutes heard on other stations.
“We’re not just trying to fill air time,” says Harvey.
With more than 115 hours of music — and counting — at their disposal, it’s doubtful they will ever need to.
