All hikers should follow the “Leave No Trace” outdoor guidelines:

• Plan ahead and prepare

• Travel and camp on durable surfaces

• Dispose of waste properly

• Leave what you find, take out what you bring in

• Minimize campfire impacts

• Respect wildlife

• Be considerate of other visitors

Whether you’re hiking for an afternoon, a day or overnight, bring these essentials recommended by Rachel Franchina, recreation program manager for the

Hahns Peak/ Bears Ears Ranger District of the United States Forest Service:

• Map and compass

• Plenty of water and snacks

• Lightweight rain gear keep an eye on the weather and be prepared for changing conditions

• First-aid kit

• Sunscreen, hat and sunglasses “You’re more likely to burn up here (at high altitude)”

• Insect repellent

• Weather-proof fire starter

• Flashlight
