The American Cancer Society is urging thousands of tobacco users across the country to give up their tobacco products for the day – and perhaps a lifetime – on Nov. 20 for the Great American Smokeout. Quitting smoking is a lifestyle change that you can make. By using at least one of the ways listed, you can double your chances of successfully quitting your tobacco product. By using more than one of these suggestions, you can double your chances of staying quit forever.

– Self-help materials are available to help you learn how to prepare for your quit attempt, develop strategies to cope with cravings and prevent relapse. Call the Visiting Nurse Association at 875-1882 for these free materials.

– Telephone counseling is a confidential, supportive and effective quitting option. Call the Colorado Quitline at 800-QUIT-NOW (784-8669).

– Nicotine replacement therapy, such as nicotine patches and gum, is available to help relieve withdrawal symptoms that occur when you stop using your tobacco product. Call the Quitline at 800-QUIT-NOW for a free supply of patches or gum.

– Chantix or Zyban are two medications that have been shown to change the brain’s response to nicotine. Call your doctor or primary care physician to discuss this option.
