A collection of uncommonly stoic guard dogs will sit in front of downtown businesses this summer as part of a fundraiser for the Routt County Humane Society.

The dogs, made of fiberglass and hand-decorated by area artists, will be on display for three months in front of 12 downtown businesses before going up for auction Sept. 13 at the Humane Society’s fundraising dinner at the Steamboat Springs Community Center.

“It’s kind of like their little home for the next three months,” said Lee Smith, an office manager at NRC Broadcasting who is helping to organize and promote the event.

During today’s First Friday ArtWalk, JACK FM will do a roaming remote broadcast from each participating business, with a short interview from each artist.

“They’re just making a big circle around Lincoln,” Smith said of the interviews, which will focus on the artists who volunteered their time to decorate the dogs in everything from jewels to newsprint.

Lance Whitner, a Steamboat Springs artist who drew inspiration from her dog’s statuesque stance, painted brown spots with flowers sprouting from them on her fiberglass pet project.

“In her big brown spots are mantras that you can meditate on, and in her little brown spots is the word ‘om.’ And then she also has flowers painted all around the spots,” Whitner said.

“The idea for ‘Om Dog’ came just from looking at her. She’s quiet and sitting down, which made me think of downward dog, yoga and meditation. So ‘om’ is just something to bring to it. Not humor, just a little something,” she said.

Those who want to bid on the dogs for the Sept. 13 auction can do so at the Humane Society dinner, or by calling the Humane Society at 879-7247. The dogs will be on display during business hours at the participating restaurants and stores.
