Annual Yule Log hunt begins Monday in Steamboat

Steamboat Springs — A more than 30-year tradition of hunting for a 50-pound log in mid-December continues Monday, when the first Yule Log clue will be announced.
The clues, which will be released in the Happenings section of the Steamboat Today and on the radio for 10 successive weekdays (or until the log is found), will take readers on a virtual journey from last year’s hiding spot between Casey’s Pond and the Mountain Fire Station to the 2012 location.
Tread of Pioneers Museum Director Candice Bannister said the same 50-pound log has been in use for decades, decorated with the engraved names of past winners. The hunt dates back to at least 1978, when John Bowers used to write the clues in an attempt to stump the community. In 1997, Tread of Pioneers volunteers took over clue-writing duty.
According to tradition, the log will be hidden within city limits and at least a portion of it will be visible from its hiding place. The log will not be on private property, inside of a building or in an area that charges a fee to enter.
This year, the grand prize again is a $150 Steamboat Springs Chamber Resort Association gift certificate and a framed plaque.
