Alicia Bernat: Thanks, Lorna Farrow
October 14, 2009
My name is Alicia Bernat. My sister, Aileen Sandstedt, shared with me the Lorna Lou Farrow Memorial Scholarship Fun Shoot featured in the Steamboat Pilot & Today a couple of weeks ago. We were inspired by Lorna’s passion to shoot and her commitment to share that passion with others, particularly women.
We decided as a result to attend Lorna’s first Fun Shoot on Oct. 4. While my sister (owner of CR Summit Riding Club) has shot targets with her boys and husband through the years, I had never shot a gun before, so I was a bit nervous. But I also was excited to attend this event.
We were warmly welcomed by each of the volunteers that cool Sunday morning, and along with other attendees, we proceeded to each of the shooting stations to learn how to shoot an array of firearms.
The safety and shooting instruction we received was amazing; every volunteer we met at each and every station was attentive, informative and passionate about gun safety and instruction.
We decided at the rifle station (after learning from Paul, Meg and their son) that we were both left-eye dominant and that we were going to collectively join the club. My favorite station was the last one I visited that morning, where I shot nine out of 10 targets with a Glock.
Then, as if the morning was not exciting enough, I proceeded to be the raffle recipient of the Ruger donated by Elk River Guns. When I picked up the Ruger rifle at Elk River Guns last week, Ken and his staff reiterated the importance of gun safety and use, and Aileen and I really appreciated the time they spent with us.

From what I have learned about Lorna, I suspect that she would be pleased to know that a novice woman won the raffle and that her first annual Fun Shoot event inspired at least two women participants to become active shooting enthusiasts.
Thanks, Lorna, for the inspiration!
